In your Human Design chart, two of the most practical and life-changing elements are following the decision-making strategy for your type and learning to tune in to your authority. There are seven different types of authority. We’ve all been conditioned in various ways, but most of us learned early on to do things a certain way based on our cultural values, social norms, or family trauma. When we tune into our authority, we can learn to make the right choices for ourselves regardless of outside approval or disapproval. Let’s explore each type of authority together.
In the chart: Defined Emotional Center
The most important mantra you could use is “wait for clarity over time.” You have emotional highs and lows— this is called an emotional wave— and making a quick decision on a high or a low can lead to emotional chaos or regret. Learning to get in tune with your personal wave will help immensely as you learn what it feels like to come to a midpoint and to come to a peaceful sense of clarity about an important decision.
Take your time, ride your wave knowing that nothing is wrong with you for feeling your highs and lows, and wait until you reach the calm on the other side before giving your final “yes.” As you learn to wait, you’ll find that you will gain the wisdom of emotional discernment and others will sense this wisdom. The right people will be drawn to you and decision-making will become more and more intuitive as you practice.
Tip: Don’t commit unless you already have peaceful clarity. Give yourself time, say something like “I don’t know yet” or “Let me sleep on it” when others want an answer.
In the chart: Defined Sacral, Emotional Center Undefined
Have you ever heard the advice “listen to your gut?” This advice is best for those of you with sacral authority. The sacral center is meant to respond to external opportunities and situations and makes “uh-huh” and “uh-uhn” sounds in response (these sounds might differ a bit based on your language or culture but think about the sounds small children make when they want or do not want something).
These “sacral sounds” are indicators of what excites you or turns you off, and they are, unfortunately, often conditioned out of us when we are young. We are taught to speak full sentences in order to appear polite and lose touch with our guts. Tuning into your body and learning what feelings you get and what sounds you make when you are lit up about something and alternatively what feelings you have and what sounds you make when something is a “no” is really important for you. Start by feelings into easier questions. If you can, have a friend ask you simple yes or no questions to begin to feel into your sacral response.
Some examples of easy questions are “Is your name _______?” “Is it raining?” “Is it winter?” You can gradually move into questions that hold more meaning such as, “Do you like where you live?” “Is your job good for you?” “Are you happy in your relationship?” As you can see, those questions might push you out of your sacral and into your head, where you’ve been conditioned to accept things in your life that don’t necessarily make you happy. When you are happy with your life, though, you generate more and more positive energy and send it out into the world. It truly is your job to find what makes you happy.
Tip: If you hesitate when answering yes/no question, then the answer is a “no” or “not right now.”
In the chart: Defined Spleen, Emotional and Sacral Centers Undefined
Splenic authority feels like an instantaneous inner knowing when presented with an opportunity or situation. It comes on quickly, like a flash, and then it’s gone, so it can be difficult to recognize in this loud world. Because the spleen does not give you the answer more than once, it will be a practice to learn to recognize what is right for you in the moment if you’ve spent a lot of your life ignoring it in favor of mental or emotional conditioning.
The quiet but consistent voice inside of you— this is your intuition— tells you what is healthy for you in the moment. Learning to trust yourself looks like making the best choices for yourself in the moment based on that intuitive inner knowing. Even if it differs day to day, even if it doesn’t make sense to your mind, and even if it doesn’t make sense to other people, learn into that trust and it will grow a little more each day.
Tip: Reflect on a time when you absolutely knew something was correct. What was it that made you act? What was the feeling in your body?
In the chart: Defined Heart Center; Emotional, Sacral and Spleen Centers Undefined
If you have Ego Authority, you are either a manifestor or a projector. As a manifestor with ego authority, whatever you blurt out in the moment without thinking is your truth— this may be difficult for you because you were taught as a child that this is rude. It’s important for you to shed that conditioning and own your desires. It’s okay to ask “what’s in it for me?” and decide right away if it’s worth it to you, or not.
As a projector with ego authority, it’s similar but slightly different. Of course, your strategy as a projector is to wait for invitations, so it’s not about blurting out answers. It is, rather, about waiting to be recognized by others and invited into opportunities or situations, and then deciding if the benefit is worth it for you.
Either a manifestor or a projector with this authority needs to check in with their bodies to know whether they have the energy to follow through with the things they are saying yes to, or not.
Tip: When making decisions, ask yourself “What do I want? What’s in it for me? Is it worth it?”
In the chart: Defined G-Center & Throat, Undefined Emotional, Sacral, Spleen and Heart Centers
It can be easy to lose sight of who you are when the conditioning of the world is so loud, but learning to trust the truth of who you are is key for you. You need to learn to listen to your own voice and trust the information that comes from it. Only say yes to things that feel easy to say yes to verbally. Talking with a close circle of friends who will not try to sway your decision one way or another can help you learn to hear and trust your powerful inner voice.
While you wait for invitations, follow the things that bring you true enjoyment and pleasure and make sure you are getting enough rest and relaxation in your life too. Only say yes to things that feel really good to you. The very vibration of your voice is your guidance— tuning into your soul’s essence and speaking from that place will tell you everything you need to know.
Tip: Learn to listen to yourself without letting your mind hijack the answer.
Environment / Sounding Board Authority
In the chart: A Combination of Defined Head, Ajna and Throat Centers; All Centers Undefined Below the Throat
Unlike the other types of authority above, you have what is called “outer authority” rather than “inner authority.” Your head or ajna are defined so it might feel like you have “mental authority,” but the mind is not the authority for anyone. There is no particular center defined in your body to check in with to make sure your decision is correct for you. With so much openness in the body, it is essential that your surrounding environment feels good. If your environment feels wrong, what takes place there will also be incorrect for you.
It’s very important for those of you with this authority to have a trusted group of friends who know how valuable it is for you to have people to listen to you. These friends are not there to give advice necessarily, but rather to act as sounding boards for you to bounce ideas off of.
Tip: Rather than discussing or listening to advice, listen to yourself talk and mull over the situation to find the answer to your question or the solution to your decision-making.
In the chart: No Centers Defined
If you are a reflector, you, unlike the rest of the types who are solar beings, are a lunar being. Throughout a 28-day period of time, your chart connects to the moon and brings you different experiences of being 2-3 times per day. During the shifts and changes of the lunar cycle, it is important to talk about your decision with trusted friends who will not try to influence your decision, but rather listen to you and reflect your own information back to you. By hearing yourself talk about the decision over time, you will come to a deep inner knowing about what the right choice is.
Environment is also key in helping the correct opportunities and people come to those of you with lunar authority. If you do not feel good in your environment you have to learn to trust that it is an unhealthy place for you to be. You will always mirror back the health of your environment.
Tip: When something comes into your field and you need to make a decision, write it down. Write about how it makes you feel for an entire lunar cycle. At the end of the month, is it still a yes? Then go for it.
Learning your authority (and the authority of your close family members and friends!) can help you understand yourself and others better. Be gentle with yourself; it takes time to get in tune with the way you receive information about the best decisions for you. The more you learn to listen to your authority, the closer you’ll get to living the life you came here to live.
