Ethical AI Use in Small Business: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Hey there! I wanted to start sharing a little behind-the-scenes look at how I’m using AI in my small business. As any entrepreneur knows, you end up wearing all the hats—marketing, operations, customer service, accounting… you name it. But these days, AI can actually help carry the load. Not take over everything, just help. Like a really smart assistant who never sleeps.

That said, I want to be intentional. I know AI comes with real human and environmental impacts. So I’m not here to tell you I have it all figured out. I don’t. I’m just sharing my journey—messy, thoughtful, in progress. I’m learning as I go, and I’m asking myself a big question along the way:

How do I use AI ethically? (In my opinion)

Let’s break that down.

The Environmental Side 🌱

AI isn’t magic—it runs on massive data centers that use a ton of energy. Some of the bigger models especially can have a hefty carbon footprint. One thing I’ve learned is that using smaller models tends to use less energy. That’s a win.

Also, I recently read that some innovators are figuring out how to reuse the heat from AI servers to power buildings. Amazing, right? But even with that kind of progress, we still have to do our part. For me, that means being mindful of what tools I use, when I use them, and how often.

The Human Side 👥

This one’s tricky. I don’t want to use AI to replace people. But I do think we can use it to work smarter—not harder. Imagine if your team could do the same work, but faster or with more ease, because they had the right tools. That’s the balance I’m trying to strike.

It’s not about deleting people’s expertise—it’s about amplifying it. What if we could all win?

How I’m actually using AI (and keeping my voice in the process)

I’ve been using AI tools for a few years now. At first, it was mostly small, task-specific tools—like something to help me write a social media caption when my brain was totally fried. Now, I’ve started experimenting with some of the bigger models, but I still guide them closely, like I would a human team member.

Here’s how I’m using AI without losing my unique vibe:

Emails 📬

  • Idea Generation: Sometimes I just need a nudge to get started.
  • Structure Help: If I’m stuck on how to lay out a message, AI helps me untangle my thoughts.
  • Polishing: I’ll often write something and then use AI—or Grammarly—to tighten it up. It helps me make sure the reader has the best experience.

Video Content 🎥

I love making videos, but writing the descriptions? Not so much.

YouTube titles and descriptions are super important for SEO, but I would get so stuck. I found a tool (thanks, AppSumo!) that takes your video and helps write the title and description. Total game-changer. Now I actually look forward to uploading videos to my Human Design TV channel.

Blogs ✍️

Another AppSumo gem: I found a tool that turns your video into a blog post. Since it’s my voice and content in the video, the blog still sounds like me—it just saves me hours of time. It used to take forever to turn video outlines into something polished. This makes it fun again.

Social Media 📱

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with social. I used to do it all myself, and honestly, I got way too sucked in. Then Instagram broke up with me and ghosted me (true story). So now I focus on platforms that align with me—mainly Pinterest and YouTube.

I love the creative parts, like designing a Pin in Canva. But I’d get stuck writing the perfect caption or headline. AI helps me get unstuck. I use one small model tool for marketing specifically, but the bigger OpenAI tools also come in handy when I need a boost.

Why This Matters

When I first heard about AI, I was super resistant. I was also resistant to smart phones! But now I see it differently.

You don’t have to let it take over your business—or your creativity. But if you use it with intention, it can free you up to do more of what you love (and what actually grows your business). That means more abundance for you—and the people around you.

The goal isn’t to hoard the gains, like some giant corporation. It’s to grow in a way that feels sustainable, supportive, and shared.

So yeah, I’m still figuring it out. But I’m here, I’m learning, and I’m committed to doing it thoughtfully. I’ll keep sharing the tools I find, what works, and what doesn’t. Let’s figure it out together. 💡
